The images on this site are all related to the statue of General Nathanael Greene that is on the top of the Waynesburg Courthouse.

A brief history of the statue:
A statue of General Greene was originally mounted on the top of the courthouse when it was built in 1850.  It remained there until December 25, 1925, when sparks from the Downey House Hotel fire caught the statue and destroyed it.  A replacement was designed by John Pauley Jr. and carved by Albert Wise.  This new statue was put on top of the courthouse on November 17, 1927.  The new statue remained on the top of the courthouse for nearly 70 years, until the county commissioners decided in 1997 to remove it for repairs and restoration work by Miles Davin Sr.  Shortly after the statue was removed, the county commissioners decided to contract with Davin to have the statue replaced rather than renovated.  Davin based his design on old sketches of the statue and historical information about the General.  On September 10, 1998, a Greene County maintenance crew transported the statue to the courthouse.  There a technical crew took over and successfully hoisted the new statue to the top of the cupola.
